My Professional Background

In 1978 I earned my Bachelor of Arts degree from the New College of California. I received my Masters in Education (1984) and Ph.D. (1988) from The University of Virginia. An especially useful aspect of my training at The University of Virginia entailed working within the Department of Family Medicine in the Family Stress Clinic. Here I was supervised by leading psychologists and psychiatrists in conducting individual, couples and family therapy, and I trained family medicine residents how to identify those patients in their future practices who would be best served by seeing a psychologist.

I completed a school psychology internship in The Orange County School District in Orange, Virginia (1986), and a clinical psychology internship at The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) (1988). At MUSC my training included work with adults at the Veterans’ Administration Hospital; with adults and child victims of sexual abuse and crimes at the National Crime Victims’ Research and Treatment Center; with children and adolescents on the inpatient units of The Institute of Psychiatry and at The Children’s Hospital.

I am a licensed clinical and school psychologist in South Carolina (license #465). I have worked in clinical settings in Virginia and South Carolina, and have been in private practice in Mount Pleasant since 1988. My services extend to children, adolescents, adults, couples and families. In addition to therapeutic and coaching services, I frequently lecture and write on various topics in my areas of expertise. I contributed to Lowcountry Parent magazine on the issue of siblings and sharing. I have lectured on the role of work in adults’ lives, on Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder in a variety of forums, including to the faculty at Trident Technical College, and on a variety of parenting issues. My research has included the impact of families’ moving on children’s social adjustment, and the impact of rape on adolescents, and the impact of rape on marriage.

To stay up with the changing world of behavioral sciences, I engage in ongoing monthly consultation with a number of other psychologists, both locally and elsewhere in the U.S. I attend workshops on subjects ranging from infidelity to making marriages work, and from treating difficult kids to most recent findings in the treatment of individuals with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. I subscribe to multiple professional journals to keep up-to-date in that way, and participate in on-line training as well. All this makes me knowledgeable about the ongoing research and treatment being conducted around the country.
