Psychotherapy is just not easy to describe. It varies depending on the personalities of the psychologist and client, and the particular issues that bring you in to see me. There are many different methods I will tailor to your needs. Our time together will be actively spent in understanding the issues, the “big picture” and problem-solving. In our working relationship we will collaborate on defining the goals of our work, and what we can accomplish. Once I have information from you on the issues, I will give you my “take” on things, and with your commitment we will work toward success. In order for therapy to be most successful, you will have to work on things we agree are important both during our sessions and at home in between sessions.
There are benefits and risks in psychotherapy – some unpleasant emotions and memories will come up, and this is especially likely in the beginning. Most of these will lessen as you get more comfortable, and you find a different and better perspective. Just taking this first step to see me usually helps. We achieve success by developing a trusting relationship in which my objective and expert perspective helps you sort out the puzzle, and helps you develop better tools to cope. You will develop better relationships and better self-esteem, find solutions, and experience reduced stress and distress. You need to be honest and open for all this to succeed. Our first two sessions (about 45-50 minutes long) will involve building the foundation; assessing the issues and whether or not I am the right person to provide the services you require.
Therapy means a big commitment of time, money and energy so choose your therapist carefully. Ask me questions as needed – it is your life. Get the best for yourself.
